The Six Tastes and how they affect the Doshas

Ayurveda places great importance on incorporating all of the six tastes – Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Pungent and Astringent – in your diet in order to promote balance of all three doshas.

As previously noted, each dosha is pacified or aggravated by certain tastes. Consuming too much of a particular taste will start to aggravate the dosha. As you will have seen in the chapter ‘Agni: Your Fire Power’, if you are experiencing an aggravation of a particular dosha you might find your body intuitively craves a particular taste. Listen to your body and seek out some of that taste. If the feeling passes, then you know this was a ‘healthy’ craving. If the craving persists for many days, this is a sign that the craving has become ‘unhealthy’ and something needs to be done to address the balance.

Remember:

Vata is pacified by Sweet, Sour and Salty; aggravated by Bitter, Pungent and Astringent.

Pitta is pacified by Sweet, Bitter and Astringent; aggravated by Sour, Salty and Pungent.

Kapha is pacified by Bitter, Pungent and Astringent; aggravated by Sweet, Sour and Salty
